This interior, featuring no fewer than two sofas, is a stylish design by Interieurstudio Hanna. We sat down with Hanna to talk about color and styling.

Hanna, what is the secret behind this interior?

"Add color. Add character. And above all: don't play it too safe."

That was the starting point for the entire project. A semi-detached house often has a neat, logical layout. That’s a fine foundation, but I want the living room to also say something about the people who live there.

Where do you start if you want to make a standard home stand out?

With what the residents themselves love. That creates the common thread. After that, you dare to make choices: a color you wouldn't expect, an eye-catching material, a detail that people will ask about. That is how you turn a semi-detached house into a home with character, instead of a house that looks just like all the others.

The wall with custom cabinetry immediately catches the eye. What makes it so special?

The unit runs the entire length of the wall and is crafted in a warm wood look. It creates a sense of calm, but it’s certainly not a boring wall. It features illuminated niches with a peach-orange back panel, which makes vases, candles, and books stand out. The TV has been given its own spot, with Arte wallpaper behind it. This makes it feel like part of the design, rather than just a black void in the room.

And that arch?

It provides softness in a wall with many straight lines. In the arched niche, I created a seating area with cushions, making it a wonderful place to curl up with a book. This custom piece is both beautiful and practical: plenty of storage space behind sleek, handle-less doors, while still leaving room for styling.

Color without it becoming cluttered

A pink sofa, the peach-colored dining table, colorful decorative cushions. How do you keep it from becoming too busy?

By choosing colors from the same warm family. The wood in the cabinetry acts as a grounding point, and the light, high-pile rug keeps the whole look airy. On top of that, you can play with cushions, prints, and accessories. This allows you to really dial up the color without it becoming chaotic.
